A recent conversation spurred the thought that there is more than one way to show Ambassadorship and it’s not just the obvious of wearing swag and showing up to company events. What you do and say has power both inside and outside of the company. I wanted to take a few minutes to share my thoughts on Ambassadorship and how it’s more than what most may think.
Before beginning, let’s quickly explain what it means. Ambassadorship refers to being a representative of an organization and promoting its values, mission, and goals. As an ambassador, you uphold the reputation of your company and create a positive image. Whether you are interacting with customers, stakeholders, or employees, your actions and words reflect on Vendasta.
With that in mind, let’s dive into how Ambassadorship can be demonstrated both internally and externally to Vendasta.
Being an Ambassador outside of Vendasta
When representing Vendasta outside the workplace, how you talk about the company and act can affect how others will perceive the company itself and not just how they perceive you as an individual. If you’d like to be a positive Ambassador for the company, here are some ways (but not limited to) you can do that:
Wear the company's branding
This can be as simple as wearing a shirt with Vendasta’s logo or by using products with Vendasta’s logo. This shows that you are proud to be associated with the company and are willing to represent it. Don’t have swag and want some? You can get some here!
Participate/Get Involved
Attend company hosted events such as Ideas on Tap or any of the Social Committee events. By attending and socializing with the individuals there, you will be able to positively represent the company. Other opportunities include going to career fairs, using volunteer hours to volunteer within the community (such as code camps or Big Brothers Big Sisters), and just in general helping to promote the company at opportunities that arise.
Be knowledgeable
Be familiar with the company's products and services, as well as its mission, values, and goals. This will help you answer questions and represent the company in a positive light if the moment arises. At the very least, understanding what the company is trying to achieve and the benefits we’re bringing to those who use our software can go a long way.
Follow the company's code of conduct
This includes adhering to the company's values and ethical standards, as well as avoiding behaviour that may harm the company's reputation. How you behave in person and online can affect the company. Be mindful of what you share online or what you talk about to those you meet.
Be a Referral
By recommending Vendasta as a place to work to friends, family and people you meet, this helps show that you are proud to work at Vendasta and see it being a positive change for those around you. You can help do this passively by even keeping your LinkedIn up-to-date or other social media platforms that you choose to show this information. (Not required btw!)
Engage on Social
Posting about Vendasta is a great way to be an Ambassador of the company. I know that many of you are already active on social media, and we want to harness that enthusiasm and turn it into a win-win situation for everyone. Whether you're sharing a photo of a project you've been working on, promoting our services to your followers, or just giving a shoutout to your colleagues, every post you make will help us reach new audiences and raise awareness of our brand. Plus - tagging Vendasta in your social post automatically enters you into a monthly draw for $100! 🤑
Being an Ambassador inside of Vendasta
Being an ambassador for Vendasta is just as important within the workplace as it is outside of it. As you grow through the levels at Vendasta, you will be viewed more and more as a Leader. You may not realize it, but how you act and what you say can and will likely be taken with more weight.
Here are some ways to demonstrate ambassadorship inside of Vendasta:
Lead with Sunshine to promote a positive work environment
Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere by showing respect and kindness to your colleagues. Treat those around you how you’d like to be treated. Positivity and happiness are infections. You can make someone’s day by simply sharing what you are excited about, some good feedback/team win, or just by getting those around you to smile. Everyone spends most of their life at work, by making it fun and enjoyable, you will be helping your team reduce the risk of burnout and produce a better quality of work. If you feel your team is struggling here, don’t be afraid to reach out to the Engineering Management group so we can help. Vendasta wants its employees to enjoy the work they do.
Lead with Sunshine to be a positive influence
Encourage your colleagues to take pride in their work and be supportive of their efforts. A great example of where you can be a positive influence is by steering conversations to more positive points and ensuring people are thinking of both sides when things happen to take a more negative tone.
Earn Trust and lead by example
Set a positive example for your colleagues by following the company's policies, procedures, and code of conduct. How you act and what you say has a larger impact on those around you than you may think. The higher the level you are, the more weight you will have. Something that may seem insignificant to you could be taken much differently by someone more junior who is looking up to you.
Make Others Better by being a team player
Work together with your colleagues to achieve common goals and contribute to the company's success. While you are working on a team, it’s not you against the rest or a race to see who can complete the most. The entire team succeeds when the goal given or defined by the team has been achieved. Help those around you; whether that’s helping someone troubleshoot, teaching them a new skill, being someone they can talk to, etc. By helping those around you, you will also grow as an individual and an all-around benefit is that the team as a whole grows.
The above lists aren’t the only things that could be done for each, just some examples.
I recommend also giving @Kevin Lous's blog about Leadership Culture - Part I a read since he also covers this in a different view since as you level up, the more you are going to be seen as a leader in the company.
I hope this helps some people look at Ambassadorship in a different light since it truly is more than what it’s most known for. Is there anything you’d add to this list? Anything you’d disagree with? I’d love to hear your thoughts as well!
